1937 Built of steel by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, to be used as a schoolship for the German Navy. She was rigged as a three-masted barque carrying royals over single topgallant sails and double topsails. She was the third of four sister ships, the other ones being Gorch Fock, Horst Wessel and Mircea. A fifth sister was built in 1958, a new Gorch Fock.
1945 Captured by American forces.
1948 Became a schoolship for the Brazilian Navy and renamed Guanabara.
1962 Bought by the Portuguese Navy to replace their old schoolship Sagres. The Guanabara was renamed Sagres.
The Sagres still serves this purpose, and is easily recognizable by the red crosses she carries in her square sails.
