1938 Built of steel by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, for the Romanian Navy to be used as a schoolship. She was rigged as a three-masted barque carrying royals over single topgallant sails and double topsails. She was the last of four sister ships, the other ones being Gorch Fock, Horst Wessel and Albert Leo Schlageter, that were built for the German Navy. A fifth sister was built in 1958, a new Gorch Fock.
