  • 1914
    Built of steel by Joh C Tecklenborg, Geestemünde as a schoolship for the German merchant marine. She was given the name Grossherzog Friedrich August and was rigged as a three-masted barque carrying royals over single topgallant sails. She was equipped with an auxiliary engine.

    Two ``near-sisters'' had been built earlier for the same purpose, namely Grossherzogin Elizabeth and Prinzess Eitel Friedrich, although they were full-rigged ships.

  • 1918
    Taken as prize of war by the British government.

  • 1920
    Physically transported to England.

  • 1921
    Sold to Bergen, Norway.

  • 1923
    Sold to the Norwegian Shipowners Association, Bergen, Norway and was renamed the Statsraad Lehmkuhl.

  • 1924
    Transferred to the Bergen School Ship Foundation.

  • 1940
    Confiscated by the Germans and renamed the Westwärts.

  • 1945
    The Bergen School Ship Foundation got the ship back, and she was given back the name Statsraad Lehmkuhl.

  • 1967
    Sold to shipowner Hilmar Reksten because the foundation could not afford to run the ship anymore. Reksten continued to run it as a schoolship.

  • 1973
    Laid up in Bergen.

  • 1978
    Reksten donated the ship to the newly created ``Stiftelsen Seilskibet Statsraad Lehmkuhl - The Statsraad Lehmkuhl Foundation.'' Since then the foundation has arranged cruises that are open to the public, in which the participants work as part of the ship's crew.
