Built for the Sail Training Association, UK, with the purpose of giving young people the opportunity to sail on a large sailing vessel. She was rigged as a three-masted topsail schooner, and was equipped with an auxiliary engine. An identical sister ship, Sir Winston Churchill was launched two years earlier.
